AAVE stands for African American Vernacular English, and BVE stands for Black Vernacular English (not all Black people who use AAVE identify as African American). AAVE is a form of speech that evolved within the Black community that distinguishes itself from standard English due to its creative grammatical structure, pronunciation, and vocabulary.

Where does AAVE come from?

AAVE is often spoken in working and middle-class cities within the African Americans, Latino and immigrant communities. In fact, AAVE is said to have influenced the development of other lingos of English like the New York accent, Spanish-language accents and the New York Latin English.

Is AAVE a dialect of English?

The presiding theory among linguists is that AAVE has always been a dialect of English, meaning that it originated from earlier English dialects rather than from English-based creole languages that "decreolized" back into English.
